Driverless Tesla Cars Have Landed In Tampa
Tesla robotaxis hit Tampa streets last week (already booking rides via app in West Tampa, Tampa Heights, and Egypt Lake), while Waymo has been mapping the city since late 2025 and expects to open its own service soon.
Safety is the big question mark: Tesla relies on cameras only (no LiDAR), while Waymo uses a full sensor suite.
Pricing: Tesla starts at a $3.25 base fare + $1/mile; Waymo prices by route, similar to Uber/Lyft.
Kids under 8 aren't allowed in a Tesla robotaxi at all; Waymo allows them with a car seat.
Tampa city officials say they can't regulate the companies directly, but they're staying in close contact - especially with Waymo, which has already trained first responders on how to interact with the vehicles.
How do you feel about these cars and would you actually get in a driverless car in Tampa traffic?
